That’s why I created this ultimate guide to keyword research for beginners. This guide is mainly for people who have no clue about keyword research and are just getting started.
One thing I want to promise you is that after the completion of this blog post, you will become the master of doing keyword research for your blog, and be able to grow your blog.
So, let’s start with my journey of how one keyword has changed my life.
How one single keyword has changed my life?
When I started my blogging journey, I was making a monthly income of $200 -$300, and I had no idea how to increase it.
However, I am eager to learn and experiment with things, and I know that if I master keyword research skills, I will generate a good income.
So, after doing keyword research consistently for many years, I got my first break in the year 2017, and that time, I found one keyword that has helped me to generate $50 per day.
However, I was not satisfied, and I figured out something that would help me increase some decent income from my blogs in 2019 when the magic began.
Breakthrough Point of My Journey
In 2019, I ran one site that was making around $3000 per month, but I am consistently looking for money-making keywords for my blog.
One day while doing the keyword research for my blog, I found some hidden gems that helped me to scale my website from $3000 to $15000, and that’s the power of keyword research.
That’s why I say that one keyword can change your life if you learn the art of doing keyword research correctly but to get to that point you need to practice the keyword research.
In this post, I have shared everything you need about keyword research. This post also covers

- Some advanced tips that only pro bloggers use
Now, enough motivation, let’s get into the process and master the keyword research together.
So let’s first start with the term keyword.
What are keywords?
In simple language, keywords, phrases, or questions you type on Google for relevant information that satisfies your need or solves your query are called keywords.
For example – If I type “how to start a blog” in Google “how to start a blog'” here is keyword, as you see in the below image.
The same applies to YouTube; if you type any question on YouTube, it’s also called a keyword, but these are called YouTube keywords, as you can see in the image below.
And don’t worry, in the upcoming, I will also cover how to do keyword research for YouTube, but right now, let’s focus on this.
Now you have a basic idea of the keywords, but it’s time to explore the different types of keywords types keywords are divided based on two thing.s
- Based on the word count
- Based on the user intent
Types of keywords based on the word count
Let’s understand both of these types in detail, so first, let’s start with the kinds of keywords based on the word count.
So, based on the word count, there are three types of keywords: short tail, mid-tail, and long tail, to understand these things deeply make sure you read the next section to start with short tail keywords.
Short tail Keywords
It is a type of keyword that contains 1-2 words. These keywords are primarily generic and have no specific intent of what users want to see let see some examples of these keywords are
- DSLR
- Cameras
- Smartphones
- TV
- NailArt
As you can see from the above keyword, we cannot understand what the user wants to see, and that’s why these are called generic keywords let’s understand this as one example.
For example – DSLR camera from this keyword, we don’t get the idea of what users are looking for, whether they want to see the pic of the camera or want to buy it.
So, we can conclude that these keywords have no specific intent. It’s better to avoid such kinds of keywords.
Mid Tail Keywords
It’s the type of keywords that are a little bit broader than the short tail keywords and have some intent, but again, it’s not clear these keywords have a word count of (2-3) and some of the examples of these keywords are
- Best Gaming smartphone
- Best DSLR camera
- Best Camera
From the above keyword, we can know the user’s intent from the above keyword, but it’s unclear and less specific and has high competition.
For example – From this keyword, we can have some sort of clarity about what the user wants to see, the best gaming smartphones, but again, we don’t know the budget and the price range they are looking for so it will also come under the generic keyword with less specific intent.
From this, we can conclude that these keywords are a little specific and have some intent, but again, it’s not good to target if your blog is new.
Long Tail keywords
These keywords are of 4+ word count and are less competitive with the specific user intent, and the best part of these keywords is that you will able to know the intent of the users.
Let’s see some of the examples of the long tail keyword to understand it better.
- Best camera for wedding photography
- Best gaming smartphones under 20000
- Best DSLR camera for YouTube under 50K
- Best hair dyer for the long hair
From these keywords, we can see the user’s intent and what they are looking for. Let’s take the example of “best gaming smartphone under 20000.”
With this keyword, we can say that the user is specifically looking for a gaming smartphone under the budget of 20K.
From this, we can conclude that these are the best keywords to target if your blog is new, as it has a specific intent, and we will cover later in the section how to measure the difficulty of the keywords.
Types of keywords based on intent
Now, let’s move to another type of keyword based on intent and there are four types of keywords
- Informational Keywords
- Navigational Keywords
- Commercial Keywords
- Transactional Keywords
Now, let’s understand each of them in detail to know which keywords are the best to target for your blog, and along with that, I will also share the keyword that has helped me grow my blog.
Informational keywords
When a user types any keyword with the intent of gaining information, known as an information keyword, and some examples of these keywords are
- How to take screenshots on a phone
- How to start a blog with no money
- How to open the camera on the laptop
- How to change the background on Zoom
These are examples of informative keywords where it is clear that users are looking for information.
Navigational Keywords
When a user types any keyword with the motive of navigating or moving from one website or web place from one web location to another, it is known as a navigational keyword.
Some examples of these keywords are
- Facebook Login
- Canon camera website
- Hp official website
- Dell customer care services
From the above, you will get the idea that user wants to go to a specific website, and that’s the reason they are searching specifically for their website.
Commercial keywords
When a user types any keyword with the motive of buying anything, it is known as a commercial keyword. As the name suggests, commercials mean some sort of transaction will be involved, as you can see from the keywords below.
- Best vacuum cleaner for home
- Best coffee maker for office workers
- Best water heater for home under $200
If you look into the above keyword, you will notice the same pattern that users are looking for the product and in the stage of buying the products.
Transactional keywords
When the user type any keyword and have a higher buying intent, these keywords are termed “transactional keywords”, and most of the time they have checked the review of the product they just want to buy “Some example of these keywords are
- Projector price in the USA
- Buy a coffee maker kit
- Buy MacBook Pro M2
With the above keyword, you will get the idea that the user intends to buy a product, and that’s why they are researching with the “buy” words.
These are the types of keywords based on the intent and word count. I target informative and commercial keywords, and it has worked for me.
Now you know about the keyword and their types, but that’s not enough. You must also understand how to find the right keywords for your blogs. Let’s jump into the next section.
Understanding Keyword research tools
Before you jump into finding the right keyword, you have to know the tools we can use to find the keyword.
Regarding tools, there is no limit in the market, but I am not here to give you random lists from the internet; I am sharing the list of the tools I have used so far in my blogging journey.
Here is the list of the keyword research tools that I have used so far
- Aherfs keyword generator
- Google keyword planner
- Keyword surfer
- Google Trend
- Ahrefs – (paid)
- Semrush – (paid)
- Moz – (paid)
- K.W. finder – (paid)
Out of these, my favourite tool is Ahrefs, and I use it often, but for the beginner, it’s very costly, so instead of Ahrefs, you can use Semrush; we will explore each tool for finding the keyword in the next section.
But in the end, you don’t need to trust the tools blindly. These tools are just for the idea and for filtering the keywords.
Let’s understand the few terms associated with keyword research to clarify the process better.
Terms to Understand About Keyword Research
Keyword – Any question or query that you type Google for the solution is known as a keywords.
Search Volume – How many people are searching that term per month is called the keyword’s search volume, and different tools show different search volumes, so you don’t need to trust it blindly. You just need to get an idea from it.
Keyword difficulty – It tells us how difficult it is to rank the keyword on Google. Although you don’t need to trust it blindly, you must check it manually. We will discuss this later in this post.
CPC – CPC stands for Cost Per Click, which means how much money an advertiser is willing to pay for a single click on Google.
Now, another misunderstood concept in the market is the keyword difficulty. Some people think they should consider while others say we don’t have to see keyword difficulty.
Today, we will also bust your myth about keyword difficulty. Let’s put it straightforward: you don’t need to consider the keyword difficulty of selecting the keywords.
It’s not the right way to measure the keyword’s difficulty, so you may be asking what is the right way to measure it.
How do we measure the keyword difficulty?
The first thing that you should do is not rely on the tools for the keyword. That’s the wrong approach, which tends to cause the failure of the blog.s
After working on many blogs and having success, I have developed a formula for selecting the keyword. The formula or method is called the capacity method.
Let’s understand the capacity method and how to use it for your blog to increase traffic.
What is the capacity method?
The capacity method is the process of analyzing the top results of Google for the keyword you want to target compared to your site’s current state.
Ask yourself “Can I beat them?” If your answer is “yes”, then you can target that keyword, and if your answer is no, you should ignore it.
And one more thing: different people have different capacities. The keyword that I can rank maybe you will not be able to rank, so it’s better to understand your capacity before targeting any keyword.
Now, the question big question is how would I measure my capacity?
How do you measure your capacity?
Measuring your capacity is not a big task; you just need to check the few points that I have mentioned below, and you will get to know about your capacity very easily.
- Search your keyword on Google and see what results Google is showing
- Analyze the top 10 results and filter based on the domain name D.R and DA
- Check their total article
- Check their backlinks profile (total root domains)
For example – If your site is related to blogging and you want to cover the article on “how to start a blog”
but when you search on Google and start analyzing the sites, you will see that the top sites are ranking with good backlinks profiles & total number of articles is 500.
So do you think, as a new blogger, you will able to beat them?
Of course not; you must know your capacity before targeting any keywords. Now, let’s see how you can implement it practically.
For example – my niche is related to the love bird, and I want to target the keyword “lovebird lifespan.”
Once you find the list of sites, you need to check their total article and numbers of referring domains, and if you find the lesser the number of articles and referring domains, the better it will be for you.
Competing with the sites that have fewer referring domains and articles is easier than competing with the big sites in the market.
Finally, we are now deep-diving into the process of keyword research, so let’s understand the definitions.
What is keyword research?
Keyword research is the process of identifying the query or questions that your audience is searching around your niche, helping them to solve their query with the help of your content.
But now, the big question that might pop up in your mind is how to find profitable and money-making keywords.
But before that, we must find the keyword ideas for the keyword research process.
How do you get the keyword ideas?
There are many ways that you use to find keyword ideas around your niche, but I have mentioned some of the effective methods that I have used to find keyword ideas for niches and blog
- Brainstorm keywords
- Check competitor
- Big sites
- Reddit, Quora, and Pinterest
Now, we will discuss these methods to clarify keyword ideas better.
Branstroming keywords
Brainstorming means thinking about the topics and questions your user can ask around your niche and making a list of them. For example – If my niche is related to “love bird”, so many be many people are searching for
- Love bird lifespan
- Love bird colours
- Love bird foods
These are some of the questions that I have thought about in my mind without using any tools, and these are just an example, but the point is to give the idea that you also use your mind to write a few things that comes to your mind related to your niche.
Look at the big sites
When it comes to finding good keyword ideas, it’s one of the effective methods you can use, and in this method, you have to find the big sites that are getting millions of traffic.
One of the biggest sites on the internet is Wikipedia. Everyone knows about it, but we will see how to use it to find keyword ideas.
So, let’s suppose you want to start a website related to Video gaming. Just go to Google and type gaming Wikipedia, and after that, you will land on the pages of Wikipedia from where you will get the ideas I have shown below.
All these words that you see in blue are niches and keywords, but you have to go deeper into them to find the keywords and niche ideas for your blog and check the interlink of every keyword so you will get more ideas.
Check the competitor
It’s one of my favorite methods, and with the help of this method, I have found some good keywords and profitable niches.
So, let’s understand how this method works.
Whenever you search any keyword related to your niche, you will see some websites related to your niche ranking at the top; we can call them your competitors, as shown below.
So when you find any of the competitors in your niche, you have to analyze their websites like
- What are the topics they are covering
- What keyword are they targeting?
- How have they created their home page?
- What type of anchor text they are using
Once you analyze all these, you will find the excellent money keywords and profitable niches; see the below example to get more clarity and examples – imparrot.com
As you see above, it is the primary navigation of one site, and you can see that this site is related to parrots, but they also cover parrot care, avian vests, and macaws. These are all keywords that you can use for further research purposes.
And some of the other places in your competitors where you will get the keyword ideas are
- Primary navigation menu
- Anchor text
- Home page
- Interlinking
- Sidebar
- Footer
These are the places where you will find the keyword ideas of your niche, and it’s the better way to get the keyword ideas as your competitor has already researched so that it will save your time, and you will get good keywords for the research.
Check Quora, Reddit, or Pinterest
These are all the forum websites where you can find the keyword idea for your niche, and many bloggers are utilizing it very effectively.
So, how do you find the keyword ideas for your niche using these websites? Let’s take an example from Reddit.
Steps to find the keyword idea from Reddit
- First, go to reddit.com and search for any keyword of your niche; for example, my niche is a cat, so I will search for the cat, as you can see below.
- When you search, you will see many subreddits related to your niche, but you have to join the high-member subreddits.
.
- In this case, the high-member subreddit for the cat niche is the second one, so we will click on it and join that subreddit. Once you enter, you see the joined like this.
- If you check the post section, you will see some of the posts related to your niche, and you will get the keyword of your place.

You get an understanding of finding the keyword ideas for your niche, and you will see the keyword research method.
I have followed these methods for the past 5 years and found some hidden keyword that has changed my life.
Now, we will look into the method of finding keywords and dive deep into the keyword research process.
Method of doing the keyword research
Many methods are available in the market for finding the keyword, but no one shares the best method for beginners that helps them grow their blogs.
In this section, I have shared all the keyword research methods that I have been using for my blogs and websites.
- Filter the keyword by K.D.
- Google autosuggest method
- Number method (123)
- Alphabet method(ABCD)
- Question Method (Can/is/am/how/why)
- Special character method (-,/,.)
- Prepositions method (in, out, at on)
I can promise you that you will not get these methods for free in any blog, and I have learned all these from my own experience of running multiple blogs and growing them.
We will look into these methods in detail to understand how to find the keyword of your next article or blog.
Filter by keyword difficulty(K.D.)
For this method, we will use the paid tool Semrush, and if you have the budget, you can buy the Semrush or try the Semush for 7 days before buying it.
You may be wondering why, earlier in this post, I mentioned that we must ignore the problematic keyword. Why are you now checking it?
I agree with your answer, but here I mention that we have to just use the K.D. as a filter to filter out the good keywords from the huge list.
Steps to finding the keyword using Semrush
Step 1 – Go to semrush.com and click on the keyword overview, as you can see in the image below.
Step 2- Put the keyword idea that you found after doing the research (let’s take the cat as an example ); see the below image.
Step 3 – Once you add the keyword in the keyword overview section, you have to select the country, and as you can see in the above image, I have selected the U.S. as it is my target country.
Step 4 – Once you enter the keyword, you will see the interface like this, but you will not get the same data as it varies from keyword to keyword, but you get the idea about the interface.
Step 5: As you can see from the above image, here is the list of all the keywords of your niche; you have to click on view all keywords, and you can see that there are more than 500K keywords. Now, we will filter out.
Step 6 – Now you have to add the filter in the keyword difficulty as I have shown in the image, and as you are the beginner, you have to add the keyword difficulty for 25, but again, these are just for idea.
Step 7- These are some of the keywords of our niche cat; you have to manually check the difficulty of the keywords (refer to manual keyword checking).
Remember – You don’t have to find and select the keyword based on keyword difficulty and search volume; you must check your capacity and follow the capacity method.
Aherfs free keyword generator
If you are a beginner and don’t have the money, you can use the Ahrefs keyword generator. It’s one of the best keyword research tools for free. Let’s see how you can use it.
Steps of finding the keyword using the Ahrefs keyword generator
Steps 1 – Go to Google, type the Ahrefs keyword generator, and open the website, and you will see the interface below.
Step 2 – Now you have to enter the keyword idea of your niche; as I have taken the example of “cat’ I will put the cat in the enter the keyword box, and you will see something like this.
These are the list of the keywords that you can target for your blog, but ensure that you have also checked your capacity one of the problems with this free tool is that you cannot filter out the keywords.
But in the end, this tool is the best for free to get the keyword ideas for further research.
Google autosuggest method
It’s one of the best methods to find the hidden keywords that your competitors have not covered yet.
Then this method is for you. With the help of this method, you will find the keyword that you will not get in paid tools.
So, let’s see how it works and how you can utilize it for your keyword research process, dive deeper into the niche, and search for the “Bengal cat.”
As you see, I type the keyword of my niche, and google in suggesting me the keyword. These are keywords that people are searching for in my niche.
So what does it mean?
It means that it’s an excellent opportunity for you to cover the keyword that people are searching for, but again, I am repeating that you also need to check your capacity and follow the capacity method.
Many professional bloggers use these methods to find hidden keywords, including me. That’s why I recommend you try it and let me know how it goes with your niche in the comment sections.
Number method (123)
It’s one of the unknown methods I am sharing with you, and the number method basically means you have to use the number.
It could be a year, model number, or anything associated with the numbers, and you can use numbers from 1 – 10 to see what Google autosuggest is suggesting to you. You will find many potential keywords that even your competitor will not be able to discover them.
Let’s see how it worked practically.
So you have to use the exact steps you follow in the autosuggest method, but now you have to add the number after your keywords.
As you can see, when I used the number 3, I got the suggestion from Google, and as I have mentioned earlier, these are the keywords your audience is searching for. You use the numbers from 1-10 to find the keyword.
Let’s see some examples of the coffee maker niche, and if you enter the (1-10), if you get the excellent keyword, you can target it for your blog.
Some of the other things that you can do to find the keyword of your niche using the number method are
- Use numbers in the Ahrefs keyword generator
- Use numbers in Semrush
- Use numbers in autosuggest
These are just some of the examples. If you research using this method regularly, you will find some good keywords for your blog, and eventually, you will master the skill of keyword research.
Alphabet method
You may know this method, but there are still many hacks that I have shared that will give me good keywords. In this method, as the name suggests, you have to use the alphabet from (A-Z)
So, let’s see how it gets done with simple steps.
The steps are the same as you have used in the number method. Instead of using the number, you will use the alphabet, so find the keywords.
Steps to find keywords using the Alphabet method
-Follow the same process that you have followed till now in other method
-Add the alphabet from A-Z at the end of your primary keyword to find more keyword
You can see below.
I have just entered “a” after my main keyword. How to remove it: you can see that Google is suggesting a list of keywords, and if you use the alphabet from (A-Z), you will find some amazing keywords.
Other things that you need to add “*” after the keyword, like how to change* wi, will show some keywords with different variations.
Question method
It’s one of my favourite methods to find sites with fewer articles and referring domains, so in this method, you have to use the question at the beginning of the keyword. Some of the questions that you can use are
- Can
- Are
- Do
- Does
- Why
- Should
- Is
We can use these common question words to find the keyword in our niche; we will take the example of a Bengal cat.
So, let’s see how to do it practically.
You can use the same formula when you are searching in any tool and once you Start searching with the question words, you will discover some good keywords to target.
As you can see from the video, you can use different question words to find the keywords for your blog, and it’s one of the best ways to find the less competitive keywords, but always follow the capacity method before targeting any keywords.’
Pro tips – Whenever you see any word or phrase that repeats in every keyword, then most probably it can be a micro niche, so you need to research further, as you can see in the pictures below
And in this case, we will check whether we can create the micro-niche of student loans and check that you have to apply the capacity method. If you can work on this niche, you can go with it.
Preposition method
It’s also one of the underrated methods, and fewer people use it in the right way, so the things that you have to do with this method is you have to use the preposition words to find the keyword of your niche.
Some of the prepositions that you can use to find the keyword related to your niche or category are as follows
- In
- For
- Between
- From
- After
- Below
- Behind
- About
You can use these words to discover the keyword and know more about the preposition words to get the keywords. Now, let’s see how to do it practically.
Follow the same steps as you are following in the other method
-Go to Google and search your mail keywords
-Wait for the Google autosuggest
-Add the preposition to find good keywords
As you can see, I have just used one preposition, and if you try with other variations, you will find some keywords of your niche that you target and get ranked on Google (don’t forget to follow the capacity method).
You can also follow the same method when using the keyword research. tools; you just need to add the preposition after your main keyword, and you will find your gems.
You have an idea about the different keyword research methods you will use to discover the keyword for your blog or start a new blog.
Now we will look at some keyword research methods for affiliate blogs I use personally for my blog, and it has helped me to find some of the good keywords to target
Using amazon
When finding the keyword for the affiliate blogs, amazon is the goldmine, and you need to know the right approach to find your next profitable niche.
And here, we have shared the same method to find the keyword of your niche.
- -Go to the amazon.com (if you are targeting USA)
- You will see all options once you visit the amazon.com in the top right corner. Click on it
- Here, you can see that you have the option of “shop by department, we can click on any department because we just want to get the keyword ideas for the blogs.
- So once you click on any department, you will see that there are sub-departments of the main department, and you have to click any of these to get the keyword ideas.
- Now, as you see the red line, these all are the keywords and the niches; you just need to research to validate it, so in this case, I will take the example of Gimbel cameras and find the keyword.
Above this product, we will do further keyword research to find a profitable niche.
These are keywords that you can target for your blogs, and as you can see, there are other keywords like ‘Drone with gimbal camera or camera stabilizer, these are a niche that you research further and validate with your capacity method.
Now let’s see how you can do the same thing with Semrush to find the best keyword or niche, you have to use the modifiers, and we have shared the list of modifiers below.
- “Best” or “Top”:
- Example: “best smartphones”, “top fitness products”)
- “Review” or “Comparison”:
- For example, “laptop reviews” or “camera comparison.”
- “Cheap” or “Affordable”:
- Examples: “cheap headphones” and “affordable fashion.”
- “Under”
- Example: Laptop under 1000$
- “Discount” or “Deal”:
- Examples: discount codes for clothing, best deals on laptops
- “Bestselling” or “Popular”:
- Examples: popular books”, and “bestselling kitchen appliances.”
- “Guide” or “Tips”: For informative content
- “travel guide for Europe”, “blogging tips for beginners”
- “For [the specific audience]”:
- For example, “gifts for men”, “beauty products for sensitive skin”, or “toys for toddlers.”
This is a list of the modifiers I used to find the keywords for my affiliate blogs; you can use that, too.
Now, let’s see how to use it with Semrush to find profitable keywords and niches.
- Go to semrush.com and click on the keyword overview.
- Click on enter the keyword for the affiliate niche. You can use the modifiers we shared above and see something like the one below.
- Now you have to click on view all the keywords as we have shared earlier in finding keywords using keyword research tools, and you will see
- Once you click on view all the keywords you have to add the modifier to get the results to see in the picture how we have added the modifiers to the modifier
Go to view all keywords> Includes keyword > add your modifiers > click on apply; you see also see the below picture
Once you hit the apply button, you will see many keywords and niches in front of you. You just need to research them further.
If you see on the top that there are more than 600K keywords, and if you analyze them properly, eventually you will have some good keywords or profitable niches, but never forget the capacity method.
Now, it is time to give you additional tips to help your journey.
Additional Tips for Keyword Research
Make a list of the main keyword or main topic.
Whenever you do keyword research, ensure that you list the keywords so that you can refer to them later; otherwise, you will forget the keyword, and in the end, it will waste your time and efforts.
Use all the methods
As I have shared, the different methods of keyword research, you have to use all the methods to find the keyword. You don’t know which method will give that keyword that will change your life.
Use modifiers
Modifiers are the game changer in the keyword. The more you research the different types of modifiers you use, the better results you will get, so make sure you experiment with the different modifiers.
- Go deeper and expand the topics.
- When you do keyword research, sometimes you will find the keyword in which fewer players are working, but you will only find it when you get deeper into the topics or keywords.
Look for the search intent.
When you find any keyword, make sure you also check the search intent of that. Ask yourself, “Will I be able to fulfill the search intent? “if you get the answer yes, then you can go with that keyword and use the capacity method for it.
Check the trend of the keywords.
Whenever you think of choosing any keyword or niche, verify with Google Trends to see whether people are still searching for it.
How do you verify keywords or niches with Google trends?
- To verify the trend, go to Google Trends and see the below interface.
- You will see the button explore in the right corner, so you must add your keyword and click the Explore button.
- As you see, the trend of the gaming chair is, and you have to select the niche whose movement is above 30; there are some seasonal keywords, so you need to avoid such keywords or niches like -Christmas tree.
It’s the method to verify keywords or any niche and ensure you work on the evergreen place and people are searching for them.
Conclusion
Finding the good and right keyword is complex, and many people do it incorrectly, which tends to become the failure of their blogs.
But if you follow the method and strategies I shared in this post, you will never run out of keywords or niche ideas, and ensure you practice them regularly. That’s the only way to find the keyword that will change your life.
